Money isn’t coming in as much as you’d like, right?
You’re not at the “barely making ends meet” level … but you’re not comfortable either. And that middle ground is far worse.
But you know what?
You don’t have to be living that way. Because there’s a money making idea out there that can actually make you more than $100 daily.
All you need to do is sell wood pallets to local businesses.
And in this post, I’ll share exactly how to get started.
But First, A Quick Backstory …
Back in 2001, I use to work in the Nike Canada Factory.
I know what you’re thinking:
Kaching!!! Discounts on shoes baby.
Yes there were those, but that was probably the ONLY perk in a utterly horrible place of employment.
Everyday at least three 53′ trucks would pull up to the loading dock, carrying pallets of shoe boxes, and the process would always be the same.
- Unload the entire truck.
- Place each empty pallet in a room to be picked up by my supervisor at the end of the shift.
It wasn’t until one day one of the truck drivers asked if I could load the empty pallets back into the trailer so he can go sell it.
What’s the harm, right?
This agreement went on for a few months.
However, it wasn’t long until he was found out by his company and delivering to the Nike Factory was no longer on his route.
But one of my colleagues, who was good friends with him, spilled the beans about the side business. Claiming that he would sell wood pallets to various manufacturers and make an extra $200 a day.
$200 a day!
Compared to me working 8 hours to make $70 a day, you better believe I saw an opportunity.
How I Went from “WTF” to “Hell Yeah!”
After I quit that job, I decided to see if I could replicate the same success that truck driver had. So on the weekends, I would drive around in a minivan with my step-dad looking for discarded wooden pallets.
Because I previously worked in a warehouse, I figured that would be the best place to start.
Boy was it ever.
We visited 12 warehouses and most of them had two dozen (or more) pallets sitting beside the garbage dumps.
After making several trips to each warehouse, we had close to 300 pallets occupying our garage, backyard and basement.
Now came the easy part:
Based on what my former colleague told me, the truck driver would sell the pallets between $2.50 – $3.50 each.
After doing some quick math, if I successfully sold them all, I would bring in more than $700. Which I did in 4 days to 5 manufacturing companies.
And after giving 50% to my stepdad for driving me around, I was making $90 a day.
The possibilities are certainly there to make money everyday with a little bit of work.
But keep this in mind:
The hard part is to consistently find pallets that you can sell. But once you have a routine and know delivery dates to businesses, finding them would be second nature.
Here’s the step-by-step process to get started …
Use This 3-Step Process to Sell Wood Pallets In Your Local Area (and Make Money Daily)
Here’s the thing about this business:
The smarter you work, the more it pays off.
Many manufacturers discard the wooden pallets after they’ve received their shipment. All you have to do is find those discarded pallets and sell it to businesses that actually need them.
With that, let’s get started with the first step …
Step #1: Find Reliable Sources
This will be one of the most challenging steps with this business.
But the first thing you want to do is check sites like Craigslist.
Go to the “Free” section:
Do a general search for “pallets.” If there are any, you’ll see it in the listing.
And if you’re very fortunate, there might be a picture of it like this one I found in my area:
When you find some pretty decent pallets, make a list of each place to consistently check out in the future. Talk to the manager/owner as well to set up a permanent arrangement.
You can do that by using Google Spreadsheet or Excel to create a list similar to this:
After you’ve done that, it’s time to move on to the next step …
Step #2: Repair Broken Pallets
If you don’t have any pallets that are broken, skip this step.
But chances are you’ll find a few that have planks that are loose. Luckily, this is an easy fix.
Here’s a quick video that I found:
All you need is a drill, a hammer and some nails (or a nail gun).
Now, because many pallets are made up oak, you’ll need to drill a hole in the oak just as a starter point for the nail. Then, nail any loose plank until it’s secure.
“What happens if there’s a plank that’s broken?”
If that’s the case, you can sacrifice the worst pallet you have and use those planks to restore other pallets.
Now it’s time to move on to the last step …
Step #3: Sell to Businesses that Want it
Here’s where things get interesting:
Now that you found sources to supply you with wooden pallets, you need to find companies that are willing to buy them.
The good thing about it is that depending on the size and condition, you could sell wood pallets for $2.50 to $3.50 each.
As you can see, you don’t need to sell too much to make $100 a day.
Here’s a few businesses you could sell to:
This one is pretty obvious.
Most manufacturing plants won’t say no to pallets because they go through them so often. And in many cases, if you can consistently supply it to them, you can make your daily quota here.
But here’s the thing:
Manufacturers are always worried about cost. So what yo want to do is drive home the benefits of buying used pallets from you rather than new ones.
That will close the deal in many cases.
You can find pallet companies listed in the phone book. Most wood pallet recyclers simply sell to a pallet company, because it’s easier, but just know that your profits will be less.
Here’s where it gets interesting:
There’s a lot of contractors, landscapers and even wood workers that want pallets of wood for various projects they’re working on. All you need to do is find those individuals.
Just like you found pallets in online ads, you could post your own ad to find individuals that would be willing to purchase pallets for those types of projects.
Here’s What to Do Next
There’s a lot of positive that happens when you sell wood pallets. The main positive is that it’s fairly easy to start — you just need to be willing to do a little work to see money daily.
But, if you want a business where there’s no waiting to get paid, which means that it’s cash on delivery, then this business is something to seriously consider.
